Finding water pooling around your indoor air handler, or a damp spot spreading on the ceiling under it, is alarming, but the cause is usually simple. As your AC cools your home, it pulls humidity out of the air, and that moisture condenses into water that is supposed to run out through a drain line. When that line clogs or the drain pan overflows, the water has nowhere to go and ends up on your floor, in the wall, or through the ceiling. Even in dry Las Vegas, a single cooling system can produce gallons of condensate on a hot day, so a blocked drain makes a mess fast. Our AC repair technicians clear the blockage and fix whatever caused it, before the water damages your home.
Why Is Water Leaking From My AC?
A water leak almost always traces back to the condensate drain system. Here are the six causes we find most often on leak calls in the valley.
Clogged Condensate Drain Line
This is by far the most common cause. Algae, dust, and slime build up inside the drain line and block it. Water backs up into the pan and overflows. Clearing the line is a quick fix, and a clean line is one of the easiest things to keep up with seasonal maintenance.
Full or Rusted Drain Pan
The pan under the coil catches condensate and routes it to the drain. Over years it can rust through or crack, so water drips straight down instead of draining. A cracked pan needs replacement, and we check yours whenever we are in the air handler.
A Thawing Frozen Coil
If the coil froze because of a dirty filter or low refrigerant, all that ice melts at once when the system shuts off, overwhelming the pan and drain. If your leak comes with weak cooling or visible ice, the real issue is the freeze-up, and we address both.
Disconnected or Broken Drain Line
A drain line can come loose at a fitting or crack, especially in an attic or tight closet where it gets bumped. Water then escapes at the break instead of reaching the exit. We trace the line end to end to find the separation and reseal or replace it.
Failed Condensate Pump
Systems below the drain exit use a small pump to push condensate up and out. When that pump fails, water collects and overflows. Testing and replacing the pump is a straightforward repair that restores proper drainage.
Poor Slope or Installation
A drain line needs a slight downhill slope to flow. A line that was installed flat or back-pitched will pool and clog repeatedly no matter how often it is cleared. Correcting the slope solves a leak that otherwise keeps coming back.
What AC Water Leak Repairs Cost in Las Vegas
Most water leaks are inexpensive to fix once the cause is identified. The ranges below include labor; the diagnostic fee is disclosed upfront before any work begins.
| Repair | Typical Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Drain line clearing | $75–$200 | Most common fix; flush and clear the clog |
| Drain pan replacement | $150–$450 | When the pan is cracked or rusted through |
| Condensate pump replacement | $150–$350 | For systems that pump condensate uphill |
| Drain line repair / re-slope | $150–$400 | Reseal a break or correct the pitch |
| Coil cleaning (if freeze-related) | $75–$150 | Addresses the freeze that caused the overflow |
A water leak is rarely a reason to replace a system, but if the leak revealed a deeper problem like a corroded coil on an aging unit, we will give you the honest repair-vs-replace picture and your options for a new high-efficiency installation, which ACE offers with 36-month 0% financing and 90 days of zero payments to start.
When an AC Leak Needs Same-Day Service
A few drips into a pan can sometimes wait, but call right away if any of these apply:
- Water is running onto flooring, into walls, or through the ceiling
- The drip is near electrical components or the furnace
- The system also stopped cooling or you see ice on the unit
- A musty smell, which can indicate water sitting long enough to grow mold
- An overflow safety switch keeps shutting your system off
ACE runs 24/7 emergency service across Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and communities across the valley from June through September. Call (702) 333-8057 and we will prioritize by the risk to your home.
Preventing AC Water Leaks
Drain clogs are one of the most preventable problems we see. On a tune-up, our technicians flush and treat the condensate line, inspect the pan, test the overflow switch and any condensate pump, and check the line's slope, so the system drains cleanly all summer instead of backing up on the hottest week of the year.
ACE offers a $49 new-customer tune-up special and a $69 standard tune-up for existing customers. Military members and veterans, along with senior residents, receive a 10% discount on all ACE services. Not sure where the water is coming from? Contact our team and we will help.

Why is my AC leaking water inside the house?
Almost always because the condensate the system removes from your air cannot drain properly. The usual culprit is a clogged drain line, followed by a cracked drain pan, a failed condensate pump, or a frozen coil thawing all at once. Turn the system off to stop the water and have the drain system inspected to find which one it is.
Can I fix an AC drain line clog myself?
Sometimes. If you can reach the drain line's outdoor exit, a wet/dry vacuum held over the end can pull the clog free, and pouring a cup of distilled vinegar into the access port a couple times a season helps keep it clear. If the line stays blocked, water keeps appearing, or you cannot find the leak, it is time for a technician.
Is a leaking AC dangerous?
The water itself is condensation, not refrigerant, so it is not toxic, but it can do real damage. Left unchecked it ruins drywall and flooring, can reach electrical components, and creates the damp conditions mold needs. The practical danger in Las Vegas is also that a leak often signals a clog or freeze that will soon cost you your cooling.
