When the indoor evaporator coil ices over, the system can no longer pull heat out of your home, so it runs and runs while the house only gets warmer. Why Does an AC Freeze Up When It Is 110° Outside?

A coil freezes for one of two reasons: not enough warm air is moving across it, or the refrigerant charge is low. Either way the coil drops below freezing, the humidity in the air condenses on it, and that moisture turns to ice. Here are the six causes we find most often on frozen-AC calls in the valley.

Dirty Air Filter

This is the number one cause, and the cheapest to prevent. A filter clogged with Las Vegas dust starves the coil of airflow. With little warm air passing over it, the coil gets too cold and freezes. In peak summer, check your filter monthly — a $15 filter prevents a service call.

Low Refrigerant

A low charge makes the coil colder than it should be, which causes freezing even on the hottest days. Refrigerant does not get used up, so a low charge means a leak. We locate and repair the leak, then recharge to spec — topping it off without fixing the leak just delays the next freeze-up.

Dirty Evaporator Coil

Over a few seasons the indoor coil collects a film of dust and grime that acts like a blanket. Heat transfer drops, the surface runs colder than designed, and ice forms. A professional coil cleaning restores the coil to full efficiency and is part of every tune-up we do.

Closed or Blocked Vents

Airflow has to go somewhere. Too many closed supply registers, or furniture and rugs blocking the returns, chokes the system the same way a dirty filter does. Keep most vents open and the return grilles clear so the coil always has warm air moving across it.

Failing Blower Motor

If the blower motor is weak or the wheel is caked with dust, it cannot push enough air over the coil even with a clean filter. You may notice weak airflow at the registers before the unit freezes. We test the motor and clean or replace it so airflow returns to normal.

Thermostat Set Too Low at Night

When desert temperatures drop overnight, running the AC at a very low setpoint can push an already-marginal system into a freeze. If your unit ices up only in the early morning, raising the overnight setpoint a few degrees often solves it — and points to an underlying airflow or charge issue worth checking.

Frozen right now? Do this before you call: Turn the thermostat to OFF (not just “cool”), then switch the fan to ON. Running the fan with the cooling off blows room-temperature air over the coil and thaws it, usually in two to four hours. Do not chip at the ice, and do not keep running the system in cooling mode while it is frozen — that can slug liquid back to the compressor and cause an expensive failure. Once it is fully thawed, call us so we can fix the reason it froze in the first place.

How long does it take a frozen AC to thaw?

With the thermostat off and the fan set to ON, most coils thaw in two to four hours. A heavily iced system can take longer. Do not try to speed it up by chipping the ice or pointing a heat source at the coil, both of which can damage the fins or the lines. Once it is fully thawed and dry, you can test cooling again, but if it freezes a second time you need a technician.

Can I keep running my AC while it is frozen?

No. Running it in cooling mode while the coil is iced over can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, which is the single most expensive part of the system to replace. Switch to fan-only to thaw it, then call us. Running the fan alone will not damage anything and actually helps melt the ice.

Why does my AC freeze when it is so hot outside?

Freezing is about the coil temperature, not the outdoor temperature. When airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low, the coil drops below 32°F and the humidity in your indoor air freezes onto it, even on a 110-degree day.
